Mavericks Program Director
After spending the last two
years coaching college basketball at NCAA Division II Upper
Iowa University, Coach Stephen returns to the AAU scene this
summer to direct the Iowa Mavericks program. Greg is
involved in the player selection, organization, scheduling,
and travel for all of the Mavericks teams, as well as
day-to-day coaching duties.
At
Upper Iowa, Greg was the top assistant coach, recruiting
coordinator, and strength/conditioning coordinator for the
Peacock Men's Basketball team. In addition to his
coaching duties, Greg was involved in monitoring player's
academic progress, and taught classes in the HPER department
for the University. Prior to his career at Upper Iowa,
Coach Stephen was the founder and director of the Iowa
Mavericks AAU team from 2002-2005, and was the co-director
of the highly successful Iowa Barnstormers program from
2005-2007. Greg has coached hundreds of games at the
AAU level, and has worked with dozens of athletes who have
gone on to have college careers at the NCAA D1, D2, and D3
levels.
Coach Stephen is a
nationally certified strength and conditioning specialist,
and holds certifications in CPR, AED, and first aid.
He is an Athletic Performance Coordinator at Athletic
Republic (formerly Mercy Acceleration) in Cedar Rapids.
Greg is a native of Monticello, Iowa, and has his B.S. in
Exercise Science from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. |

Coach Nelson
has been coaching organized sports for the over 10 years.
He has worked with men and women athletes participating in;
baseball, basketball, football, track and volleyball.
Since 2001, he has been certified to coach through the Iowa
Athletic Association. He holds a Level 1 Certification
for track & field through the USA Track and Field. He
recently became an NCAA Men's and Women's approved coach.
"Coach Nelly" is an AAU veteran
basketball coach with extensive experience with both boys
and girls AAU 14U-17U teams. In 2005, Carlos was named Iowa
Varsity Prep Coach of the Year through ASI and Future Stars
Basketball.
Coach Nelson is a graduate of
Coe College with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education
and an emphasis in Strength & Conditioning. He also holds
an associate's degree from Kirkwood Community College in
Education. Coach Nelson served in the US Marine Corp right
after high school.
Carlos is active in the youth
ministry at River of Life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has been
married to his wife, Christa, for 11 years. He has 3
sons who are already sporting Maverick gear. Deon, (16), CJ
(13), and Cameron (9) are proud to be gym rats.

Coach Nelson has
been coaching AAU club teams for the past 12 years, and
joins the Iowa Mavericks staff to coach the 16U Black team
this spring and summer.
A native of Dakota
Dunes, South Dakota, Ben began coaching his younger brother
J.J. on a Sioux City-area team as 6th graders,
working with that group all the way through their high
school careers, finishing with a record of 45-2 over their
last two summers. Ben then took over the coaching
reigns for his other younger brother, Alex, when he was in 5th grade. Alex's team (which also featured Roman
Gentry from Sioux City East, who went on to play at
Wisconsin-Milwaukee and South Dakota) played together through 8th grade.
Ben went on to assist Coach Stephen with the Iowa
Timberwolves program (where little brother Alex was the
starting PG) in AAU State and National tournaments in 8th
and 9th grade. Most recently, Ben coached at the
middle school level for Sioux City East, compiling a record
of 45-10 last winter.
Ben is a graduate
of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD, with a
degree in Elementary Education and a coaching endorsement.
He works as a teacher in the Sioux City Community School
District. He and his wife Mindy have two girls, Bailey
and Sidney, and are expecting a future Maverick in early
October. |
